Project Engineer Cryogenics (m/f/d)

Join the  NKT team that develops the next advanced technology for power cables: high-temperature superconductors! You will be part of an experienced group of NKT specialists with international connections and several collaboration partners in Germany, Denmark and Sweden. You will participate in the design, manufacturing and testing of customer-tailored solutions in exciting new projects.


Your Responsibilities:

The HTS core team members have end-to-end responsibility for development and demonstration of an attractive cable system: cable, cryostat, terminations, splices, liquid nitrogen refrigeration, and associated instrumentation and control.  Work includes theoretical and administrative work as well as practical hands-on work at our manufacturing facilities, different labs and installation sites for all team members. You will develop a novel Cryostat solution with Cryogenic and Vacuum design and lead the construction and evaluation of prototypes. Additionally you will  specify and procure nitrogen refrigeration systems and install such systems. Further key tasks are:

  • Integration of optical measurement technologies
  • Cryogenic Dielectric (CD) materials testing
  • Participate in high voltage- and high-current tests on system components
  • Lead thermal/hydraulic tests on HTS cable systems
  • Develop and manage HTS cable material quality assurance program
  • Perform manufacturing, assembly and testing hands-on tasks
  • Development of calculation tools and procedures for thermal design
  • Work with machine shops and other suppliers to procure system components
  • Implementation of commercial projects in the field


Your Background:

You must be able to communicate well with others both inside and outside of NKT and it will be important to have the ability to collaborate with colleagues outside of the HTS core team. You must be self-motivated and able to take ownership of and efficiently complete tasks. You have a Master of Science or PhD in materials, physics or mechanical engineering with experience of Cryogenics and HTS and you have to be able to interpret and apply industry standards such as IEC Standards for qualification testing. Theoretical modelling experience is a plus, including FEM (Comsol), analytical, and/or numerical modelling. Further important qualifications are:

  • Must be proficient in computer skills, including Skype, Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Project
  • Proficiency in English is a requirement, knowledge of German, Danish or Swedish is a plus
  • Travel is required up to 50 days per year, even if we maximize our use of Skype and electronic collaboration. You will report to the HTS Project Manager, and to the R&D Team Leader.
